Summary
A short and sweet ‘clover leaf’ trail; the perfect short break over the Christmas period. Ride amongst the summer lupins, explore the famous Clay Cliffs, and enjoy a soak in a hot tub. This trail is made up of two different day rides and is the perfect introduction to trail riding.
Accommodation
Omarama Station is a 12,000-hectare high country merino and beef farm in the Mackenzie Country. The shearers quarters are comfortable and traditional with a large sweeping lawn, cosy kitchen, and a dining area filled with board games to enjoy in the evenings. There are three bunk rooms which sleep six people each and a walk-in bathroom with toilets, showers, and laundry facilities.
Food
You will be treated to high-quality home-cooked meals on this trail, prepared primarily with home-grown or local ingredients. We will share cooked breakfasts and two-course dinners together in the dining room, as well as a more informal afternoon tea upon returning from each day’s ride. Packed lunches will be provided to take with you in your saddlebags.
Adventure Level
1/5 – this is our shortest and easiest trail and is suitable for all levels of rider including beginners with an outdoorsy outlook and a good sense of adventure. Although the riding is overall mostly gentle and relatively flat, there are several river crossings and a few more challenging sections of terrain to tackle. Due to the rocky terrain, we ride only at a walk on all our trails, as is traditional throughout most of New Zealand.
Ride Itinerary
Day 1
Approx four hours in the saddle.
Your trip begins with collection from Queenstown Airport and transfer to Omarama Station, travelling over the spectacular Lindis Pass – a destination in itself. Upon arrival at the quarters, we will share a picnic lunch and conduct our introductory briefing before heading out on horseback for the afternoon.
Our first day’s ride is an easy and gentle stroll alongside the Ahuriri River, riding amongst rosehip bushes and the many-coloured lupin flowers that this area is famous for, with the Southern Alps rising up all around us.
After the ride, enjoy a cosy evening back at the quarters, swapping stories and eating a delicious home-cooked dinner.
Day 2
Approx four hours in the saddle.
Today’s ride will take us to the Clay Cliffs, a unique natural wonder of sharp-pinnacled rock formations. The ride over is scenic and varied, with several river crossings to make.
We will stop for our lunch break at the Clay Cliffs, and there will be the opportunity to explore them on foot before remounting and enjoying the return ride to the quarters.
We recommend fitting in a trip to the Omarama Hot Tubs during this trail – just let us know upon booking if you would like us to organise this for you. Located very near to our station accommodation, the hot tubs are the perfect way to truly relax after two days on horseback.
Day 3
Our trip ends with one last full farmhouse breakfast before collection by your transfer for the return trip to Queenstown.

The Mountain Musterers Trek was really memorable. The scenery was impressive, the horses just amazing - giving the riders confidence and taking such good care of us. I loved staying in the character huts, appreciating the company, the laughs and the food. Mother Nature provided very varied conditions for us, giving me a range of challenges as well as providing some interesting terrain. An awesome experience.Posted on Google Bevan PatersonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Just completed the Musterers Mountain trek - what an experience- it far exceeded expectations. A great way to see the Southern Alps - the horses were amazing. This is a fantastic horseback adventure traversing the beautiful Southern Alps under the guidance of a great horseman John Wall and experienced wranglers. If you’re made of tough stuff, can ride a horse well and love being out in the wilds of nature … this is the adventure for you. Mountain ridges, beautiful tussock country, the original trails ridden by musterers over decades … this terrain is a true privilege over which to have access. Topping off the experience is the wonderful warm hospitality and yummy cooking by Angie. Totally recommend.Posted on Google Vicki GaillardTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I'm 71 and have ridden all my life but have never experienced a ride like this, the horses were so amazing and we saw country only accessible on horseback or foot. Crossing braided rivers with snow covered mountains as a backdrop on a totally sure footed horse that calmly went wherever pointed was just the best experience. Learning to totally trust these beautiful horses was the best part of a totally awesome holidayPosted on Google Lynette BibbyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Had a wonderful 5 days trekking Lake Hawea, Hunter Valley with Adventure Trekking. Angie and John are great hosts and work very hard to ensure we all have a great experience. I loved every minute of the four days I spent with John & Ange, an awesome group of like-minded riders, and their beautiful heard of horses, (and Tui the dog of course!). On the Birchwood Station trek we explored beautiful countryside and ate delicious meals, all prepared by Ange. I was very sad to leave but I am already planning my next trek - I'm hooked!Posted on Google B & W JaggardTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. What an incredible adventure completing the Musterers Pack Trail from St Bathans to the Ahuriri Valley. We waded through rivers, crossed shingle slides, scaled mountains, stayed in back country huts and experienced a range of weather, all of which added to the journey. John our guide was amazing, a great host and an exceptional horseman. The horses were all stunning, obviously so well loved and cared for. Angie prepared delicious food for us to cook up in the huts and made us wonderful meals before and after our trek. I could not recommend this company enough if you want to experience an authentic horse trek in Central Otago.Posted on Google R BonettiTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Feel so privileged to be able to experience the NZ backcountry on horse-back. The horses are purpose bred, know their job and give you confidence to enjoy the scenery and this incredible experience. Wonderful hosts, stories and evening laughs. Loved it!!
